After a wonderful day at the Taj Mahal, we took an overnight train to Varanasi. Varanasi is located on the banks of the river Ganges in Uttar Pradesh. It is the holiest of seven sacred cities in Hinduism and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The city houses an endless amount of temples and shrines and is famous for its many ghats (steps that lead to the river Ganges). It is also the burial site of many Hindus as they believe that death at Varansi brings salvation. (more…)

On the 21st July (Crizzy’s 24th Birthday, whoop whoop) we took an early morning train (7am) from Jaipur to Agra. To our surprise the CC (Chair Coach) train offered a complimentary breakfast with tea, water, cookies, bread and indian food. A great start to the day! (more…)

Jaipur – The Pink City
We arrived in Jaipur by train late at night on 19 July following a hectic day in Pushkar. Jaipur, founded in 1727, is the capital of Rajasthan and has a population of roughly 3 million (an average size in India). Jaipur is also known as the “Pink City” due to the pinkish colour of the buildings in the city center. (more…)

We took an early (7am) train from Jodhpur to the city of Pushkar. Pushkar is a small town located close to the city of Ajmer and the Thar Desert. It is one of the holiest cities in Rajahstan and is visited by many Hindu pilgrims every day. (more…)

Jodhpur – The Blue City
From Jaisalmer we took a 6hour train to the beautiful city of Jodhpur. We arrived in Jodhpur late at night and to our surprise it was raining! The first rain we had seen in India. The streets were flooded and many people had come to the train station to shelter themselves from the rain, resulting in the train station being completly overcrowded. We had not seen so many people in the same place at once since Delhi. (more…)

Bikaner – The Business City
After a long and (again) sleepless night in the train we finally arrived in Bikaner on 14 July around 7am. Bikaner has a population of roughly 7million and is located near the Thar desert. As we arrived at the train station people began starring at us, as though we were aliens. Uncertain how we were going to get to Jaisalmer and unable to find anyone who spoke english and was willing to help us, we became very frustrated. Luckily a tuk-tuk driver called Monu had just arrived at the station and saw the two of us… (more…)
