Having arrived at “Gafiyah Guesthouse” in Krabi on 22.October after a 6hour journey from Koh Phangan, we immediately booked a tour to visit the Koh Phi Phi islands the following day. The owner of Gafiyah GH had some great discounts for trips with “Barracuda Tours” and rather than paying 1800baht per person we only paid 1300 (roughly 30euro). The next morning we were picked up at our guesthouse around 8am and were driven to Ao Nang beach where a speedboat was waiting to take us to Koh Phi Phi.

Koh Phangan – Full moon glory
Yes, we were on Koh Phangan during full moon and no, we did not go to the full moon party. However, we still enjoyed a beautiful full moon on 19.October with clear skies and many stars.

A snorkel trip to Koh Nangyuan
On 17th October we had booked a snorkeling trip once around Koh Tao and ending at Koh Nangyuan. We headed to the pier in the early morning, just to find that we were not the only ones booked on the boat. To our surprise there was a large group of women giggling and laughing and putting sun block on each other getting ready for a day of snorkeling. However, once we got closer to the pier we noticed that the women had peculiarly low voices and some had very masculine features. It was only then that we realized that we were not facing a group of women, but a large group of ladyboys! It seemed that we were more intrigued by them than they were by us.

Koh Tao – An island paradise
Following a 10hour overnight bus ride and a 3hour ferry ride we could not have been happier to arrive on Koh Tao in the morning of October 15th. Our accommodation “Captain Nemo Guesthouse” was located near the pier and luckily we did not have to walk far to find it. The lovely guesthouse owners, Philippe and Som had already been awaiting our arrival and immediately checked us into our (airconditioned!) room. We were so tired from the lack of sleep on the night bus that we ended up sleeping for 3hours before we could find the energy to explore the island.

Bangkok – A crazy capital
We arrived in Bangkok in the late afternoon on 12.October after a short bus journey from Ayutthaya. We had booked two nights at the “Born Free” hostel in Bangkok which had only recently opened and is located near Khao Son Road, the main shopping district. We were both exhausted from a day of temple sightseeing in Ayutthaya so we decided to have an early dinner and sleep.

Ayutthaya – An old city
We arrived in Ayutthaya on 11.October after 5hour bus journey from Sukhothai. Our Guesthouse “Somjai Palce” was located in the centre of town and therefore an ideal starting point to explore the city. We decided to visit Wat Phra Mahathat in the evening just before sunset. It was the perfect time to take photos of the famous tree that has grown around a Buddha head.

Sukhothai – A historical park
We took a 6hour bus from Chiang Mai to Sukhothai on 10.October and were relieved to discover that our guesthouse “Ruengsrisri” was located directly next to the bus station. This saved us from having to pay an overpriced tuk-tuk journey to our hotel. As we arrived in Sukhothai earlier than expected (around 1pm) we decided to visit the famous Sukhothai historical park on that same day.

Chiang Mai – Northern Thailand
After a 22hour bus ride from Laos to Chiang Mai we finally arrived on 6.October in the late afternoon. We made our way straight to “CM Blue Guesthouse” where we had arranged to stay for 4 nights. It was our luck that we arrived on a Sunday as the local weekend market in the centre of town was set up. We strolled into town and ate at one of the many foodstalls that had been set up around the temples. The weekend market was very interesting as people from all the surrounding towns had come to Chiang Mai to sell their goods.

A day with the elephants
On 7.October we had booked a one day elephant experience at Baanchang Elephant camp near Chiang Mai. We had researched this camp in great detail before agreeing to do a one day trip. What many tourists do not know, is that elephant abuse is a very common occurence in Thailand. Almost all of the elephants used in elephant shows and for elephant trekking have suffered brutual torture methods employed by mahouts and elephant trainers in order to make these wild creatures obedient and tourist friendly.

Kuang Si Waterfall – Simply majestic
On 2.October (Felix’s 29th Birthday, yes he is very old!) we decided to go on a day trip to the beautiful Kuang Si waterfall. The waterfall is located 25km outside of Luang Prabang and can easily be reached by tuk-tuks that leave the city on a regular basis. Kuang Si is set in a stunning location in the middle of the jungle and consists of one big waterfall and a series of smaller falls which are divided by large pools that have formed between them.
